Bringing clarity to complexity: a bold explainer animation to help NHS Employers support the people who power the NHS.

The challenge

NHS Employers is an organisation responsible for supporting workforce leaders and representing employers across the NHS in England. Their mission is to help develop a sustainable workforce and support NHS employers in being the best they can be.

NHS Employers had received feedback from their audience, including through a website survey, indicating that some users don’t fully understand the breadth of services and support they offer.

To address this, they wanted to create an engaging and informative animation that would highlight their role and showcase the range of great work they do within the NHS in England, specifically tailored to their diverse audience.

The process

Before making a start on the creative work, we held an in-depth workshop with the team to gather key insights and ensure we had the right tone for their audience.

Using the feedback from the workshop, we explored several potential directions for the animation. We wanted to capture their aspirational goals, highlight their focus on collaboration and community building, and create something that would empower and educate their audience, all while making sure the visuals were bold, warm, and engaging.

We also realised that the information needed to be presented in a modular way, with one part showing who they are and the other highlighting what they do.

The creative

Taking the workshop insights into account, we developed an animation that visualised the many moving parts of the organisation using a modular framework.

This approach allowed us to showcase both the micro and macro aspects of NHS Employers’ work while keeping the core message clear.

We designed a suite of characters and scenes within a grid of circular shapes that reflected their brand, ensuring it felt consistent and familiar. These elements interact to create a sense of a living ecosystem, with people always at the heart.

The first half of the video provided a broad, macro view to illustrate the scale and scope of their work. The second half zoomed in for a more detailed, micro perspective, highlighting specific resources and tools.
