The Science Council website
The Science Council is a collaborative community of more than 30 professional bodies and learned societies, collectively representing over 320,000 scientists, science technicians and science teachers
The challenge
Their website needed to work for a broad set of audiences, applicants, registrants, member bodies, employers, volunteers and partners, while clearly communicating the value and standards behind professional registration. The existing setup spanned two WordPress sites and multiple third-party tools alongside Salesforce, creating disjointed user journeys, content sprawl, and a heavy administrative burden.
The process
We began by aligning stakeholders around what “good” needed to look like: a digital presence with the authority expected of a professional standards body, but welcoming enough to support scientists and technicians at different career stages. We ran key advisory group workshops to test assumptions early, prioritise needs, and keep decision-making anchored in real user and organisational requirements, particularly around professional registration journeys, member and employer needs, content governance, and what must be easy to find on every visit.
From there, we mapped end-to-end journeys and rebuilt the architecture so the site could serve as a clear front door to the Science Council’s work, professional recognition, events,, policy and news, equity work, and employer engagement, without forcing users to “learn the organisation” to navigate it. Alongside the structure, we developed a modern design direction that balances professionalism and warmth: clean typography, strong hierarchy, accessible components, and a distinctive visual language using gradients, geometric shapes and rounded corners to feel contemporary, confident and human.
The requirements
- Design of a single website for diverse audiences
- Clear communication of professional registration value and standards across all key pages
- Consolidation of two WordPress sites and third-party tools into one cohesive platform
- Streamlined end-to-end user journeys to remove disjointed experiences and content sprawl
- Reduced administrative burden through improved publishing, governance and system simplicity
- Rebuilt information architecture so users can navigate without needing to understand internal structures
- Modern design system balancing professionalism and warmth, with accessible components and strong hierarchy
- Clear pathways and guidance for registration statuses to support confident applications
The solution
We delivered a consolidated, modern website that supports the Science Council’s role as a trusted convenor and standards body, connecting audiences quickly to what matters: professional registration, events, and the breadth of the community. The platform brings clarity to professional recognition, including pathways into Chartered and Registered statuses (CSci, RSci, RSciTech and CSciTeach) and the supporting guidance users need to complete applications with confidence
The site foregrounds the Science Council’s core purpose, connecting the science professions and offering professional recognition, while providing a clean, accessible experience that works across devices and audiences. It also creates a stronger foundation for ongoing content publishing and campaign activity, with a structure that helps teams manage content more independently and consistently.
