Flat lay of printed Shelter “Brick by Brick” reports, showcasing dynamic black, red, and white designs with charts, infographics, and bold headlines.

We designed Shelter’s ‘Brick by Brick’ report that addresses the social rent crisis. The report adopted an urgent, bold, and undeniable tone to convey the gravity of the situation.

Digital version of Shelter’s report viewed on a tablet, showing the conclusion section with a photo of social housing and bold red circular brushstroke framing the headline on delivering 90,000 social rent homes per year.

The challenge

Shelter came to us to create a report which adhered completely to their established brand and also communicated the urgency of the social rent crisis to a new government, grant-holders and policy-makers. They needed this report to mince no-words about the realities many people find themselves in and the design needed to match this energy.

The process

We used their brand shape elements at innovative scales to create movement and a sense of urgency. Their colours were inverted in places, to create variety and pacing through the document and an assertive, consistent layout, created structure, from which these strong design elements could hang, without overpowering.

The requirements

  • On-brand design
  • Urgent, no-nonsense tone
  • Policy-maker focused
  • Bold and direct visuals
  • Clear, structured layout

Bold graphic with red paintbrush swoosh and white uppercase text stating: "The housing emergency is growing, and the government must act now."

The solution

A bold, frank visual tone of voice, lending strength to their written content and by extension, their cause.
